Representatives of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the Isle of Man were invited to a gold award badge presentation at Buckingham Palace.
2016 is the 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Alison Gawne (left on photo), Awards’ Co-ordinator, for the Department of Education and Children’s Youth Service, and Ken Callister (right), Principal Youth Officer, attended the event, which was hosted by the Duke of Edinburgh and attended by the Earl of Wessex.
Alison and Ken were presented with a plaque to commemorate the 60th anniversary by former England goalkeeper David Seaman and his wife and former TV Dancing on Ice partner, Frankie.
Student Voirrey Baker, from Ramsey Grammar School, was chosen from the Island’s gold award recipients to attend the event and receive her badge.
On the Island, the award is holding two fundraising challenges to raise money for the local grant fund, which supports any young person taking part. These challenges are:
- January – December: the Isle of Man Anniversary Challenge gives people the opportunity to complete a section of DofE and raise money for the local grant fund to help young people with the cost of their award. Cost to register is £10.
- April – October: Seven Hilltop Adventures is a geocaching challenge to encourage people out onto the hills and to raise money for the local grant fund to help young people with the cost of their award. The book of clues costs £10, these will be numbered and there will be a prize draw at the end of the year.
