The Department of Infrastructure advised motorists in October 2012 of its intention to remove vehicles belonging to individuals who have unpaid fixed penalty fines outstanding.
The Department has put this policy into practice and is now regularly removing vehicles that are parked without regard to the parking restrictions. Examples of vehicles taken included:
- One car left for a prolonged period parked in an area that had a ‘16hr in 24hr’ parking restriction. This vehicle had several unpaid parking tickets outstanding.
- One with 10 outstanding parking offences and no road tax.
- One with over 100 outstanding tickets.
All vehicles are removed to the Department’s secure compound. Owners can recover their vehicles once a release fee of £108 and daily storage charges of £12 per day have been paid and once the vehicle is properly taxed and insured and, where relevant, parking fines have been paid.
Leonard Singer MHK, Member for Highways, said:
'The vast majority of motorists tax and insure their vehicles and obey parking rules. Most of those who do receive parking tickets pay them promptly. This measure is not aimed at them. Drivers who do not see the need to pay for a tax disc or who ignore parking tickets will find that their vehicle is not where they left it and that getting it back is an expensive business.'
